FAAS Architecture aims to transform Calgary through thoughtful, sustainable solutions.

Q&A with James Andalis
P. Eng & Partner

Committed to addressing urban challenges, FAAS excels through client collaboration while building trust in their insights while discovering innovative design solutions.
James Andalis, P. Eng & Partner from FAAS joins us to discuss some of their upcoming projects that strive to create spaces that positively impact our communities.

Build Canada:  Your collaboration with Kalamoir Construction and the Darcy Ranch Townhomes in Okotoks by consists of 32 units; 16 townhouse units all with 16 below-grade secondary suites. When you approach a project like Darcy Ranch, what’s your creative process like? What was your architectural and design inspiration?

James Andalis:  To meet Kalamoir’s density targets, FAAS was required to develop Secondary Suites to optimize additional development space. Typically, a Secondary Suite located in a basement is characterized by minimal natural light and an uninviting sense of entry. Inspired by New York Brownstones, we incorporated a sunken patio design, providing a separate, more private entrance and full-size windows to enhance natural light.

BC:  How does FAAS ensure that their home designs reflect the personality and lifestyle of their clients while also considering future generations and changing trends?

JA:  Our design philosophy embraces a fusion of modern and clean aesthetics, emphasizing simplicity while maintaining a timeless appeal. We believe that well-balanced compositions, enriched with thoughtful articulation, can effectively support both contemporary and classic design preferences. This approach allows flexibility, ensuring that the design remains relevant and adaptable as tastes evolve over time. By focusing on clean lines, balanced proportions, and subtle detailing, we create spaces that are both elegant and versatile, offering enduring value to the user.

General Block is a small commercial development in the community of Bridgeland, consisting of three restaurant service bays on the main floor with office space above.   Project Location:  65 + 69 7A Street NE Calgary, AB

BC:  How do you prioritize functionality and aesthetics in your designs?

JA:  At FAAS, our design process always begins with a thorough understanding of the client’s budget and target market. We believe that aesthetics and functionality should not be viewed as opposing forces but as complementary elements that can work in harmony. Our approach seeks to ensure that practical and functional requirements are fully addressed without compromising the overall design vision. By carefully balancing these factors, we create spaces that not only meet the needs of the user but also reflect a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing direction, ensuring both utility and beauty are integrated seamlessly.

BC: What’s your firm’s approach to sustainability? What role do architects and designers play in ensuring a sustainable future?

JA:  Sustainability is a team effort, a collaborative endeavor that requires commitment from all stakeholders. At FAAS, we are deeply committed to supporting sustainability initiatives by ensuring that every opportunity for environmentally responsible solutions is thoroughly explored. From the initial design phase, we present all possible sustainable options to both the client and the engineering team, fostering a transparent dialogue that prioritizes eco-friendly practices. We meticulously design and specify materials and equipment that align with our sustainability targets, ensuring that the final product meets both the environmental goals and the practical needs of the project. This holistic approach allows us to integrate sustainability into every aspect of our designs, creating spaces that are not only efficient and functional but also environmentally conscious.

BC:  What are some of your other projects that you are the most proud of?

JA:  We recently completed an exciting joint-venture project with Diamond Schmitt Architects from Toronto on the SAM Centre, the new museum dedicated to the Calgary Stampede. This project stands as a significant cultural addition to Calgary, showcasing our ability to collaborate on high-profile, community-focused developments. In addition, we successfully completed the General Block, a small yet impactful commercial development. This project has garnered recognition for its thoughtful urban design, winning the prestigious Mayor’s Urban Design Award (MUDA). Both projects reflect our commitment to creating meaningful, functional spaces that enhance the urban landscape while honoring local heritage and modern design principles.
