Movember’s Construction Challenge: Building a healthier future for Canada’s workforce

The construction industry knows what it means to work together to get the job done — whether it’s building a tower, solving problems on site, or pushing a project across the finish line. But there’s one challenge we can’t ignore: the health and wellbeing of the people who power this industry.
Across Canada, men face serious health risks that often go unspoken about or undetected. With over 85% of the construction workforce being male, this isn’t just a health issue — it’s a workforce issue.
• 3 out of 4 suicides in Canada are by men
• 1 in 8 Canadian men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, and 1 in 30 will die from it
• Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in young men aged 15–39
• Construction workers face higher risks of stress, burnout, and mental health challenges compared to other industries
That’s why Movember and Canada’s construction industry launched the Movember Construction Challenge — a 30-day campaign each November that blends friendly competition with life-changing conversations about men’s health.

A Growing Movement
In 2024, more than 100 workplace teams and 1,400 Mo Bros and Sisters across Canada’s construction sector joined the challenge, raising nearly $1 million for Movember’s work in mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, and testicular cancer.
Ledcor took home the coveted national trophy, a testament to their leadership and commitment to driving conversations and change across the industry.
And it’s not just about fundraising — it’s about shifting culture. As Kevin Hatch, Co-owner and President of Twin Lions Contracting, puts it:
“Twin Lions has been a champion for Movember and mental health for over 8 years now. In the construction industry, there is a disproportionate number of men who struggle with their mental health. Too many of our colleagues, coworkers, and friends have been affected, so let’s stand up as leaders in this fight — together.”
Why It Matters for Your Workforce
Beyond the dollars raised, the Construction Challenge arms employees with the tools and confidence to take action for men’s health:
• How to spot early signs of prostate and testicular cancer
• When and why to reach out for mental health support
• Practical tools for checking in on coworkers, friends, and family
• Confidence to have open, stigma-free conversations on site and in the office
