As a husband-and-wife team at K2 Prairie Builders, Mike and Maria Thompson work together to offer a boutique style service that is unique to the custom home building industry. BUILD CANADA sits down with Mike Thompson to explore how K2 assists families in creating spaces they love to call home. Here, he shares K2s’ dedication to sustainable building practices, their collaborative approach with clients and construction teams, and the foundational principles that define their identity.
Build Canada: Describe your building style in three words.
Mike Thompson: Timeless, Intentional, Enduring
BC: What are some of the core benchmarks for sustainable building that guide K2 during the construction process?
MT: K2 Prairie Builders approaches sustainability as an integrated process, controlled by the LEAN construction methods, and guided by the principles of LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design). LEED provides a globally recognized, point-based framework that evaluates buildings across key categories, including Sustainable Sites, Water Efficiency, Energy and Atmosphere, Materials and Resources, Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation, and Regional Priority. Projects accumulate points to achieve certification levels ranging from Certified to Platinum, encouraging a balanced and measurable approach to high-performance building.
Our team applies these principles from the earliest design stages. We guide clients into prioritizing responsible site selection and land use, incorporate water-saving systems such as low-flow fixtures and drought-tolerant landscaping, and focus heavily on energy performance—one of the most heavily weighted LEED categories. Through high-efficiency building envelopes, modern HVAC systems, and renewable energy solutions, we aim to reduce both operational costs and environmental impact.
Material selection is equally important. Here at K2 we emphasize high quality, and low-impact materials that are built to last. At the same time, we enhance occupant well-being by improving indoor air quality, maximizing natural light, and using low-emitting products.
BC: In the construction industry, effective client communication serves as the cornerstone that connects every phase of a project. Why is maintaining consistent and transparent communication vital for the relationship between K2 and your clients throughout the building process?
MT: Building a home is one of the most significant financial and emotional investments a client will ever make—and communication is what protects that investment. At K2 Prairie Builders, we believe the experience should feel collaborative and personal, not transactional. Unlike larger home developers, where clients can sometimes feel like just another file in the system, our approach is hands-on, responsive, and relationship-driven from start to finish.
We prioritize clarity from day one by setting realistic expectations around budget, scope, and timelines, ensuring there are no surprises as the project progresses. Our team provides proactive updates, detailed project management, integrated CRM with a customer portal they can access 24/7, as well as weekly site updates with pictures. Keeping clients informed before they have to ask, and maintaining open lines of communication at every stage. Equally as important, we are transparent in all decisions and changes—especially when it comes to costs, allowances, or unforeseen conditions—so clients can make informed choices with confidence. All trade partners have access to their own portal as well, which allows them to keep the project top of mind and see all necessary project documentation ex. Change orders, schedules, etc.).
This level of consistent, transparent communication reduces uncertainty and prevents misunderstandings, but more than that, it creates a sense of trust and partnership. Clients remain actively involved in the process, rather than feeling overwhelmed or out of the loop.
BC: How does K2 maintain its quality standards during the construction process, and what strategies and collaborations help streamline the building process with your team?
MT: We believe the quality of the home is a direct reflection of the team behind it. Every sub-trade and building partner we work with has been carefully selected based on the quality of their craftsmanship, their reliability, and their ability to deliver on schedule. We prioritize working with professionals who take pride in their work and consistently perform at a high level.
K2’s QAQC is held to a high degree, and all our trade partners are aware of these strict requirements and performance standards long before the project begins. We spend time during the pre-construction stage bringing every key stake holder up to speed and making sure everyone is on the same page. During construction we implement a series of checks and balances to make sure our quality standards are upheld throughout the project. Our approach is built on respect, clear expectations, and strong communication. We provide detailed scopes of work and realistic timelines upfront so every trade knows exactly what’s expected, reducing confusion and keeping projects running efficiently. This level of clarity helps minimize rework and keeps the job site organized and productive.
We also foster a culture of accountability and collaboration. Challenges are a natural part of construction, but with the right team in place, they’re addressed quickly and with a solution-focused mindset.
BC: As a custom home builder, what would be a dream project look like?
MT: Our dream project would be a true design-build, net-zero home built from the ground up with performance guiding every decision. For K2 Prairie Builders, that’s where craftsmanship meets purpose. It’s not just about building a home that looks good on completion day, but one that performs exceptionally for decades – quiet, comfortable, efficient, and resilient in our Southern Alberta climate.
What makes this exciting for us is the level of intentional planning required from the very beginning. Everything from site orientation and solar gain to wall assemblies, insulation strategies, and air sealing becomes critical. The building envelope is no longer just a component, it becomes the foundation of the entire system. Getting that right requires precision, discipline, and a team that understands the “why” behind every detail.
What excites us most is the opportunity to fully integrate high-performance building principles from the very beginning. From advanced envelope design and airtightness strategies to optimized mechanical systems and energy modeling, every step requires a higher level of planning and precision. The transition from a conventional build to a net-zero or passive-style home introduces different materials, methods, and sequencing and that’s where the challenge becomes rewarding.
It also introduces a different level of coordination across trades. Mechanical systems need to be thoughtfully designed and properly sized, not oversized as a safety net. Windows, insulation, and air barriers all have to work together seamlessly. There’s far less room for guesswork, which pushes everyone involved to operate at a higher standard.
From a construction standpoint, it challenges us in the best way. It forces better sequencing, tighter execution, and smarter decision-making. From a client perspective, it delivers a home that is not only energy-efficient, but healthier to live in and more predictable in long-term operating costs.
Ultimately, a project like this aligns with where we see the future of residential construction heading. It’s an opportunity to build something that not only performs at the highest level today, but continues to deliver value, efficiency, and comfort for decades to come. and the kind of work we’re excited to be leading.
